The EU funding controversy is yet another sign of the troubled relationship between Brussels and the government of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán

There had been rumours that the Hungarian government had stopped sending invoices to the EU from April 15, as the EU has itself stopped the payments. Now Hungary has started sending invoices again, and within 60 days from their approval, the EU will have to pay up.

The cause of the “scandal” was that the Hungarian government has reduced costs in connection with EU tenders, and some interests were offended. Brussels had put on hold some of its EU funding to Hungary after it found alleged irregularities in the way development subsidies were managed in Budapest.

MTVA, the Hungarian partner station of the Euranet Plus radio network, spoke with Nándor Csepreghy, deputy state secretary responsible for Hungary’s development programs, about the status quo. (audio in Hungarian)
